Sweden's skärgården — the Stockholm archipelago — comprises roughly 30,000 islands, skerries and rocky outcrops scattered across 150 kilometers of Baltic coastline.
The term skärgård, literally "garden of skerries," appears in medieval shipping logs as early as the 1300s, when merchants navigated these labyrinthine channels to reach the fortified trading port of Stockholm.
